What you should know about me….

Maria Furtado

Let me answer the five W’s we all learned somewhere along the way:

Who am I? With close to 30 years of experience in work related to the college search, I am a knowledgeable and honest counselor ready to help with your search. And it’s always your search, not mine.

Where did I come from? I am a first-generation college student, originally from New Bedford, Massachusetts. Although my parents did not attend college, they were both smart, curious people and they instilled a love of learning in me. I went off to college with plans of attending law school. But life had other plans, and I ultimately found a great place for me—education.

What do I do? By day, I work at an independent high school. I like researching colleges, talking through the lists and ideas, editing essays, etc. If you need a little extra support in the college search, let’s see if I can help.

When could we work together? As we all learned in the pandemic, we can do a lot over Zoom. If we can meet in person, even better. But our conversation about your college search can continue through Zoom. And the other when: When during your high school experience should you start? Parents and guardians are sometimes ready before the student. I believe anytime is an okay time as long as the student is ready.

Why consider working with me on your search? I will always put the student first and the family right alongside the student. College is a major investment—not just of money—but time and emotion, too. I want students to find not just one college but a short list of colleges they would be happy to attend. Then there are lots of reasons to celebrate and lots of options to choose from in the spring of the senior year.

My Philosophy

Each college search should be as unique as the student searching. Your list should be just that—your list! Working together to better understand the basic big three of the college search—academic fit, social fit, financial fit—we can build a long list, a short list, and a final list. I might recommend a place you don’t know about yet. But, remember, they don’t know about you yet either! And, you’re probably pretty amazing.

What Others Say

Maria Furtado was an immense help as my family navigated the college search process for my two daughters. She spent time getting to know both girls and listening intently to their hopes and dreams. She asked pertinent questions to help my daughters focus in on the key areas that would allow them to have productive, happy experiences at the college level. Hearing both my daughters say, “I feel like I belong here,” as they decided on their respective colleges allowed me, as a parent and educator, to feel confident that each one was in the best place to grow intellectually and as individuals. Thank you, Maria, for all the care and guidance you have given our family. We are ever grateful.
Parent of Two Girls

Maria has a breadth of experience that is rarely found in college counselors. With three decades in the college admissions and counseling profession, her comprehensive knowledge, and wealth of contacts with colleges, universities, and professional organizations, she is able to be an effective advocate for students and families. She approaches college counseling with the enthusiasm, empathy, and dedication that comes from doing not only what she intimately knows, but also what she loves.
Chief Enrollment Officer and Dean of Admissions

I have always observed Maria encouraging students to ask the hard questions to help them focus beyond “getting into college” and instead to figure out how their talents, interests, and dreams will help them get the most out of their college choices. Her professionalism, expertise, and calm counseling demeanor, coupled with a ready sense of humor, can only result in a college search process for students that is not only successful but also enjoyable.
